Identifying diff - LSD or not?

How can I tell if my non-driving Piazza has an LSD without pulling it apart?

Distinguishing marks? Chassis number details?

I can post pics if that'd help.

Cheers

Handbrake off.
Lift one rear wheel, place it in neutral. Can you spin it? (No = LSD)

Or lift both rear wheels. In gear spin either? No = LSD.
Out of gear, spin one. Does the other spin in the opposite direction? No - not LSD.
If both spin in the same direction; = LSD.

Exceptions - welded or stuffed diffs (broken/seized spiders etc).

Visually - remove the banjo and look for clips either side - in inside cage at either end.
Piazzas only (usually) have the clutches on one side; other Isuzus (Jackaroo, Rodeo etc until 4ZE1 - interchangeable banjos with Piazza except for 4.55 ratio) have them both sides.

No external markings etc.

Nice, great reply. I figured if there were no obvious external markings I could try the physical test, but was hesitant in case of locked diff, stuffed clutches, or stuffed diff! But alas, I could get lucky and actually have symptoms befitting the circumstance (for once!) haha...

Cheers, I'll stop being so damn lazy and addressing the problem to a forum, rather than addressing it myself :D

Check the option plate on the firewall for G80.

Yay!!! G80 is there :D Sweeeeet :partyman: :wav:

Now I just have to build the engine and put it in, to make sure the diff works. And if it needs shimming or new plates etc, get that done..

Mind you, G80 says what was originally fitted...
But I swapped that for my auto rear end.... (LOL)

OH LMFAO, that's the way, build the poor guy up with the G80 bit, wait until he is wetting himself with excitement, then bring him down again like dropping a fridge on his head with the "MIND YOU" and the "BUT"

It is that streak of morbid sadism that sets you apart from other sentient beings. It must be fun on your planet. It cetainly entertains me...well done :supz: :supz: :supz: :finga: :finga: :finga:

LOL, that's why we love Pete. Cold hard logic. The way it should be.

Moment over, I'll check it properly when it stops bloody raining (in a week? We always get one solid week, then it's a desert again. One truckload of suck)

Might not be tight anyway. But this thing was pretty original til the bloke ripped the engine out a few weeks before I got it. Pity I didn't get to him first - I'd have found him a 4Z rather than stuff around re-fitting all the things I didn't pull apart. I can see myself staring a thousand threads and whingeing a lot.. :toimonster:

And that's what I like about you guys - clever enough to see the humor, but more so - smart enough to understand my comment or example. (Archy - not that I am thinking of any sites or individuals in particular...! LOL!)

Alas my comment is obvious to many even though it is often overlooked.
My example is somewhat bullsh - er, fictitious - but hopefully serves as a "real" example....

Of course, I could mention a time when I and another very talented but anon Isuzu-ite removed an LSD from a Pocket-A-Part Rodeo only to find (after removal!) that it was broken teeth that had locked the diff cage....
But I covered that above with:

No need for expansion. People understand and get bored with my long replies.

PS - I have a few Jack&Rodeo LSDs. I have yet to confirm that Piazza crown's will bolt in (10 bolt), but I expect they will and therefore the pinion too.
(As with Belletts & Florians - Florians like Wasps can use a Piazza/Rodeo/Jackaroo diff centre; Belletts are on their own (only the GTR Bellett has LSD), but Florian/Bellett crown & pinions interchange... Florians are 4.1:1; Belletts are 3.9:1 or 3.7:1. Ooops - rambling again....

Well, sounds like Peter's wisdom wins yet again :P

Jacked one side today, handbrake off, and it turned with no more resistance than average brake drag. Feels awfully like an open diff.

Anyone got an LSD centre? How much?

I have a complete Piazza centre and also just a hemisphere that i salvaged from a diff the a bad case of toothless pinion.

Hmmm - I missed the updates on this thread.

But to repeat earlier, I think the (Aussie) Piazza only has the LSD clutch plates on one side. (Others uses both sides - whether GT-R Belletts, Jackaroos, Rodeos, etc.)

And whilst manual Piazzas were LSD, (Aussie) auto Piazzas were not.

And I can't see any LSD plates in the earlier two pics. Looks open to me.... (But I may need to refill my drinking vessel for a better look....)
