OK guys, I've just finished my mechanical restore, 4ZC1-T, full thread on the Zone here:

Last night I got everything hooked up, and tried for the first time to turn her over. She cranks good but no fire. So, I looked at the flow chart in the manual, and it says the first thing to check here is firing order. So, I just reversed my plug wires to see if there was a difference, and sure enough, she rumbled a little like she wanted to start, but didn't. It was late, so I went to bed so I can go at this today with more time and energy.

So my guess is that it is simply a timing issue (I hope). The machine shop returned the motor to me, and they said everything was set to TDC. I don't know if that means cylinder 1 or 4. Either way, I think the timing is just off and I need to sort it. What is the best approach?

Take the cam cover off for a kick off and remove spark plugs.Rotate the engine until cyl's 1 and 4 are at top dead centre, check this with a probe down the plug hole (carefully) and also look at the timing marks on the front pulley to make sure it is bang on. Then look at the cams and see what position the lobes are in. No 1 should be valves "on the rock" in other words one valve just closing and the other just opening. No 4 should have both valves with clearance. As a double check the mark on the cam wheel should align with the mark on the top of the back plate. That confirms your valve timing is set correctly as well. If valves are opposite to this and the timing mark isn't in alignment then rotate the engine one complete revolution to set it right. Now you know you have tdc on 1 and 4 with no 4 at fire position. Now you need to check your dizzy is in the correct tooth mesh. If it is correct the rotor arm should be pointing up at approx the 10 o'clock position to line up with no 4 plug lead post. If it isn't then remove the dizzy back and reposition the dizzy shaft until the small indent mark on the shaft lines up with the casting mark on the head when back in mesh. If you don't know what I'm on about refer to the picture. The dizzy cap should have its leads pointing up and leads as shown.

OK, I thought I had it all correct but its hard to see the marks I think. I'll give it another go tonight.

Okay I can see we need to sort out some translations for you. "what are you doing for a crust" translates as How do you earn your living? Simple huh!

Now "Septic land" Aka "Zippo Land" These are affectionate terms for the USA.

America is populated by Americans, sometimes called yanks. In NZ and the HUGE spider and snake infested Island to the west of us we have inherited some liking for English cockney rhyming slang. You know the kind of thing, apples and pears = stairs, frog and toad = road. These are often abbreviated to just apples and frog. With me so far? So Americans = yanks = septic tanks abbreviated to septic. Now Zippo is an Australian version for Americans I think from the song Zippity doo dah. Or maybe from the Cigarette lighter, maybe one of the ockers will confirm or deny this. So now if you ever visit these parts you can be confident you speak the lingo like a native.

LOL. Good stuff. I do know a bit of slang from down under, having gone through a long ordeal of importing a stuffed up Ford Falcon. But these were some new ones to me. So, am I correct in assuming that 'skag' is a nice combination of "scum" and "bag"?

So, for my crust, I sit in a cubicle all day in from of a PC and wait for shit to break. By shit I mean the shitty computers, printers and other electronic devices that inhabit the building I work in. When they break, I get to leave my cubicle and fix them.

It gets pretty boring, but my downtime allows me to permeate the web quite extensively.

I personally haven't heard of the term 'septic' in referring to the US folk. Then again I might have been hiding under one of those spider and snake infested rocks :)

OK lads, I got the valve cover off just now (please call it a "valve cover" for me and not a "cam cover" so I don't get confused with your slang, its a hood damnit, not a bonnet!!) LOL.

Anyway, I guess the notch on the dizzy shaft is just that little raised line, right? As for the rotor pointing at the #4 lead on the cap, is the "front" of the rotor the part with the metal contact, or the part with just the plastic? Does that make sense?

I also rotated my crank so the mark is dead on at '0' on the timing cover. Next I guess I need to pull the plugs and stick something in there to make sure #4 is at TDC.

Its getting late here, so I am turning in. Will have at it some more tomorrow.

lol the Australian one is 'seppo', which is the same as septic but follows the Australian tradition of shortening words then lengthening them with an O, commonly used on people's names. eg Stevo, Davo, Robbo, Glenno, Johno.
