Sick of stirring the pot?

Post by wedgenut »

In case anyone wants to know, most of you are probably aware of the need for good bushes in the gear change at the bottom of the lever and the front of the remote shaft but even if they are good it will still be like masking soup if the slector fork rod is slopping about in the top cover. The bushes in there are a split sintered bronze or alloy of some kind and the shaft itself doesn't usually wear too much. Replcaing the bushes is dead easy and makes a huge difference. I buy standard bronze jobs, spin down the outside to about 2 thou over, bore the inside to 5 thou under and press them in. A quick spin out with a hand reamer does a good job of sizing them nicely in line. They feel like a whole new car after its done for the sake of an hour or two getting it out and in and machining time plus 2 bushes at 8 bucks each. I've done three now so am well practiced at removing the shifter in place. You just have to remember to replace the tunnel plug on the front of the remote case or you will end up with a really annoying oil leak after a while.
So many cars, so little cash
