Gear box troubles!
You gotta fix that, believe it or not if that leaks it can migrate up the cable with rotation and the first you know about it sometimes is when it starts dripping onto your foot. It doesn't do the speedo any good either and makes a shit of a mess. Think of the fun you can have with that, pull into the gas station and ask them to check your dashboard oil.Yeah the speedo gear shaft has a seal on it some kind of o-ring if i remember correctly, mine's leaking too.
I guess its okay if you only do short trips but i don't know how many miles you have to do before it reaches the top. I bet somewhere in the world there is a government funded study group researching how many revs of the cable it takes for oil to travel a certain distance, you know the type of people, they always sat at the front of the class at school and never had a bad hair day. LOL

Thats sealed with an O-ring too. Take care pulling it out, its not hard to break the lip off round the outside edge if its a tight fit and you jamb a screwdriver in there and try to lever it out..Rick82 wrote:i replaced the O ring today and degreased the gearbox down and refilled it, took it for a spin then checked again and it is still leaking all over the place so tomorrow i will check again. i think its coming out of the speedo cable hole??
Check and make sure you havent pinched the rear seal as well.

leaky gearbox part 2
hey guy's im about to pull half the gearbox out this weekend. I cleaned the gearbox down last month and put her up on stands so i could get under there and realised the leak is coming out of the extension housing. There are six bolts i think holding the back end of the gearbox on and it is leaking out of that seem. I rang PEP'S auto spares for a seal but they dont list them, is there a seal or something that goes inbetween the back of the gearbox and its extention housing?? if not i think i will use some gasget glue.
Any info would be much appreciated.

There is a gasket (or should be) between the casing parts and it is an oil resistant paper job, can't tell you the thickness but it would only be about 0.25 or 0.4mm max. You could shell out a couple of bucks and buy some material and cut one to suit. It isn't a complicated one to do. You have to be a little bit careful with gearbags as in some caases the casing clamps a bearing or something and too thick or too thin could be a problem. If that doesn't apply just use some decent gasket replacer but is probably more expensive than gasket material.

If your going to do that i would reccomend removing the whole box out of the car to do it. Mush easier that trying to put the box back together up side down.
I dont realy think you will need a gasket, theres no tapered roller bearings in the box. Id just get a tube of three bond and use some of that, its the stuff thats used to put motorbike engine cases together.
Some of that two part Knead it metal forming stuff can stop leaks too. Not sure if you would be able to get it clean enough to seal. I onces used ti to seal up the bottom of the cases on a motor bike gearbox, it was easy to get it clean, tip the bike upside down.

i had it looked at by a mechanic friend of mine today and he said to just take it to a gearbox specialist to have it resealed as it will need to come completly out of the car and as i dont have the facilities to do that at home the car would be off the road for along time. while it was up on the hoist i had a proper look at it and it is leaking from both sides of that cast iron spacer in the middle of the box. if i was to remove those bolts holding it together would it all spring apart?? is there any tention or springs in there??
Whoa! there cowboy, your fixin to go into Injun country unless you really know what you are doing. Don't go taking loosening those. If it is leaking at those seams you are up for a decent strip and rebuild to do it right, not a job for the faint hearted. Even if you have a comprehensive manual that gives you step by step instructions on part "A" and "B" etc you will find it ain't never that simple. Practice on someone elses gearbox first or pay some bugger who knows waht they are doing to do it for you. Otherwise it might be tears a bedtime!i had a proper look at it and it is leaking from both sides of that cast iron spacer in the middle of the box. if i was to remove those bolts holding it together would it all spring apart?? is there any tention or springs in there??
