running in 4zc1-t

Post by twocan »

since the car is back to running and now very close to registered (i hope) i was wondering how long the fresh motor i put in it should be run in for, does anyone know any sound figures. also i've been told that highway driving is not a good way to run motors in but never got to ask why. any help would be appreciated.

cheers

Allow engine to warm up before driving off and just drive normally avoiding excessive revs and don't let it labour, lots of gear changes. Steady highway driving at a fixed speed imposes no real load and can see the bores getting a bit glazed so that should be avoided. Some people reckon you should avoid the top quality oils in the first 500kms as they have so many anti friction additives they can prevent rings and bearings bedding in. Engine reco shops used to sell running in oil which was a basic 30w/40 oil with very few additives.

Have a look here http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Basicly the same thing stated in the books by A. Graham bell. Let the engine get to operating temperature (this is important dont put load on the engine before at temp), then drive like it vas a practice lapp at a circut.

This alternates between enough combustion pressure to evenly seat the rings and engine braking to pull upp oil from the crankcase.

Idealy you use a single wheight 30W or 40W mineral engine oil (do not drive car until at operating temp), if not available then use 10-40W mineral oil. Change the oil after the first 50 Km, then use 10-40W minneral oil for the next 3000 Km.
